About FHS

French Historical Studies publishes monographic articles, commentaries, research notes, and book review essays, but not book reviews. Its diverse format includes forums on timely issues, occasional special issues, articles in French or English, and bilingual abstracts of articles. The journal also provides services to the profession through bibliographies of recently published dissertations, books, and articles, and announcements of fellowships, prizes, and conferences of interest to French historians. All individual subscribers automatically receive free membership in the Society for French Historical Studies.

The Society for French Historical Studies convenes an annual conference, and confers the following awards annually: The David H. Pinkney Prize for the best book in French or Francophone history by a North American scholar; the William Koren, Jr. Prize for the best article by a North American scholar; jointly with the Institut Français de Washington, the Gilbert Chinard Prize for the best book by a North American scholar on the history of themes shared by France and North, Central, and South America; The Fellowship in French History, jointly with the Western Society for French History, awarded to Ph.D.s without tenure for research outside the boundaries of North America on any aspect of the history of France.
